Siege of 1759 with Generals Wolfe and Montcalm
During the summer of 1759, an enormous British force, including 200 vessels, besieged the city of Quebec for over three months. After many dramatic events, and a terrible bombardment that left much of the city in ruins, the siege culminated in the famous Battle of the Plains of Abraham, one of the most decisive battles in North American history. The capture of Quebec led to the demise of the French as a power on the continent and unleashed a series of events that led directly to the American Revolution.
An audio-visual presentation of the St. Lawrence River will offer your participants spectacular views of Quebec's old walled city and the surrounding region in which the attacks and counter attacks of the siege unfolded. From the pictures, you can appreciate how crucial the river was to the strategies of the French defenders and the British who sought to take the capital of the French Empire in North America.
Relive the clash of empires at Quebec as you consider the strategic challenges that were faced by both sides. See this military and naval confrontation through the eyes of the generals who led the contesting forces, Wolfe and Montcalm, as personified by Canadian Cultural Landscapes - two historians, Barry Lane and David Mendel. Our two generals will not only explain the siege and battle to your group but also will mingle with your participants and offer colorful anecdotes about their lives, and careers, that ended at Quebec. Both military leaders died as a result of the wounds that they suffered in the final battle.
